It looks like either /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh is missing (reinstall libx11), or that some GConf schemas haven't been installed. Check /var/log/pacman.log for entries about "gconftool-2 not found" and run "gconfpkg --install [packagename]" for each package you suspect that failed to run its postinstall this way.

gnome is nice but such a buggy pain in the a**... I think, I had the same problem just recently. Then I added
~/.gtkrc.mime file and a line
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Gnome" #might try different
and in file ~/.gtkrc-2.0 a line
include "~/.gtkrc.mime" #or enter the full path
But, because I also did -Syu (including kernel and glibc), I'm not very sure if that helped. But you can try.
OTOH, now my gnome has other problems which I'm going to post...

thanks i've created the file /.gtkrc.mime and i've added the line, then i've edited the second file .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 with the line but nothing the problem still perxist
p.s. i've discovered that if also i've edited the second file, still remain this line.. include "/home/marco/.gtkrc.mine" why?
