Enemy Territory:Quake Wars runs strangely slow

Hi!
I am not sure what kind of problem this is, my ETQW runs quite slow (i suppose 15-25 fps) although my hardware should be enough for it (3500+ and a GF8600GT). The strangest thing about it is that the game stays this way no matter if i play in 1024x768 high details or 800x600 lowest detail. It is just slow (when i make fast turnarounds or when i am inside buildings - for example). I have a manually compiled kernel with all these "speed tweaks" found here http://www.linux.com/articles/118524 (1000Hz Timer etc) and pretty much all drivers i don't need put out. So what can be the problem? I have not tried it in WinXP (simply because i don't own a copy...)
Ah, almost forgot it: The fps raises when i play alone or with only 1-2 Bots...And i can even play 1280x1024 smoothly with only 3-4 players on the server...so...what can i do about this? Do i need a new CPU?

Well if changing the graphics settings doesn't change fps then its cpu bound yes.

bots and other players stress cpu too.

So might be you need a faster cpu, and or try default kernel and kill unnecessary processes etc...

Enter game then click:
alt+ctl+F6
login there. ten enter:
top command and look how big is cpu usage.
Turn off the game and look this data again. If game off and cpu usage is big this means that you have to close some programs. top shows most hungry programs. Just use killall command.

Yes, I think the game is strangely slow here too (I own a 8500GT). I tought it was because of not using a low latency kernel, but you did it and yet the game remained slow, so I guess that isn't the problem.

Anyway, sad sad

Re: Enemy Territory:Quake Wars runs strangely slow

It might be the nvidia driver support for the 8 series of cards, because my nvidia 6600 runs it very well. With the stock kernel.

I remember there were issues like this on the ETQW community forums.  Maybe the following?

http://community.enemyterritory.com/for … stcount=67

I never had this problem, just a little mic drama.  The forums there have a lot of people having performance issues with good hardware on both Linux and Windows.  The fix is pretty minor.

Re: Enemy Territory:Quake Wars runs strangely slow

i also have this issue
and yes, changing graphical settings doesnt seem to make much difference

just compiled kernel with 1000hz, which seemed to help a bit...but not enough to make it rival winXP performance (where it runs fine)

Re: Enemy Territory:Quake Wars runs strangely slow

I'm not sure if it's really that similar to your problem or not, but quite a while ago when I updated my xorg packages, I was having big problems with both ET and RTCW.  The problem was the worst when zoomed in with sniper rifles.  Scrolling with my mousewheel would cause things to almost lock up for a second, and I'd basically have to leave the game alone for 30 seconds, then unzoom.  My fix was to use an older version of xorg.  I'm still running xorg-server 1.3.0.0-7 and a few other packages built around the same date.  The move to the next version (1.4, presumably) didn't do me any good.  If you think this might help I can probably upload those packages somewhere.

Re: Enemy Territory:Quake Wars runs strangely slow

My recommendation is to not support ET:QW. I was told specifically by the devs a long time ago that they would not try to fix a lot of issues that they could not reproduce.

The point, arch is a cutting edge distro and ET:QW is designed on old software, in distributions that don't even use close to cutting edge software. Look how often one package in arch can literally break a handful of other programs. Same goes for these games too.

But if you wanna try, xorg-server 1.5 is in testing. It may help if there is latency issues in 1.4.
