This is a big and difficult job. Unless you are a printer manufacturer, it would be a lot more time/energy/cost-effective to get a printer that is already supported. You might find pointers here:

I stand corrected - of course we are all very grateful to the dedicated coders who work long hours to provide us with our drivers (it is, nevertheless, still a considerable undertaking).
