esata drive does not get assigned a device name

Hello
My esata drive used to be assigned /dev/sdc1 when I plugged it in or turned on. It appears that after a kernel upgrade (not sure when though) that it stops working, I get output in dmesg that something get plugged in, but I don't get a /dev/sdc1 or anything. I ran fdisk -l and it also didn't show anything except my main internal drives. I doubt its a sata chip issue as I have a jmicron esata onboard, and then I also tried the nvidia sata chipset (sata ports on mobo), via a sata to esata adapter.

My current kernel version is: 2.6.23-ARCH

ata5: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0xff)
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: hard resetting port
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-32)
ata5: reset failed (errno=-32), retrying in 33 secs
ata5: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
ata5: hard resetting port
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: reset failed, giving up
ata5: EH complete

out put from dmesg
