Do you install video card drivers and glxgears show opengl is functional? what about xorg.conf? its correctly set to use the video card drivers?

Its most likely your xorg.conf , what did you use to generate it Xorg -configure or nvidia-xconfig ? Whats the output from glxinfo?

DefaultDepth 24 in your xorg.conf?

(your glxinfo is suggesting that your running 16bit colour)
