I haven't got a clue, but since kernel update, as well as some KDEmod updates at the same time, the KDE's sound system is acting really strange. The sound simply disappears after a while (when some apps, like Kopete start issuing audio notifications). After a long while (sometimes an hour or so, sometimes as much as 2 hours, the strange popup comes up with a message like 'The CPU is overloaded, KDE sound system will shut down', or something like that, and when I dismiss it, the sounds that should have been heard during the 'muteout' play rapidly one after another in a matter of seconds. This must be one of the strangest things I've ever seen...
So, basically, I'm so amazed, I'm not even looking for a solution (seriously). But I'm wondering kind of outloud what could be causing this. If you happen to know, or can guess, please, by all means...

Just dont use arts, but use an external player for your KDE sounds...
You can configure that in the notification settings and set the player to "play" (in the sox package) for example...
want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod
