Limit of 50kbps ?

Cannot seem to download faster then 50kbps for anything...

* Updating via pacman (a local mirror, and I've tried a few others)
* Downloading of ausgamers

This problem is not happening on my laptop which also run Arch.

I use wget to download stuff. Could that be a problem?

Thanks.

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Hi fumbles,
wget has an option to limit download speed (--limit-rate).
Check wget configuration file:

/etc/wgetrc

or if exists:

.wgetrc

in your home directory.
Check also in /etc/pacman.conf  the line

XferCommand=...

Otherwise you can use curl instead of wget and see if the problem persists

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Thanks for the help.

Didn't see anything in wgetrc, and XferCommand is commented out.

I tried downloading within Firefox and another browser (also tried curl), same problem ... cap of 50kpbs.

Thanks.

Are you on a low link-quality wireless connection? If 811.2 decides to drop down to 1mbit/s that sounds like a reasonable throughput.

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Using Ethernet cables. I can download more then that buy downloading a few things, just indivdually cannot get above 50kbps. Although the total is limited to 120kbps, instead of the normal 160kbps.

Thanks.

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Only thing that rings a bell is that the archlinux.org mirror is supposedly capped at 50Kb/s. Are you using the archlinux.org mirror? If so try a different one.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood your problem. If the problem is not only with pacman, then this does not apply. sad

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Ok I'm going to bump this because it is still a problem. Basically and access to the internet is dodgy. Although I am also having problems (network related but not similar) with Windows Vista. Maybe a hardware issue?

Re: Limit of 50kbps ?

Well I found the solution!!!

Went out and bought a cheap second hand NIC, and problem solved! Was a hardware issue!

Now my question is: If I go to an older kernel would I be able to use the other NICs? More importantly how can I get an old Arch kernel? I've still got the CD of the 0.7x, but that kernel is outdated(?). Would I really be missing much? Would other things not work properly?

boot into fallback kernel and then run "mkinitcpio -p kernel26"
