Yep. Sorry.
As far as I can tell, X starts, but my monitor powers down, and I have to do a hard reset: I can't switch to a tty and even the magic sysreq key doesn't work. I say "as far as I can tell", because there doesn't even seem to be a log file (perhaps it's killed by the hard reboot?)
I'm using a Radeon 9200 (yes, I know; ancient card) with the open-source driver (xf86-video-ati).

Something similar happened to me, but I use an old intel card, so the case might be different. However, you could try the fix. Put in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, in section "device" (where you have the radeon driver, etc..) this line:
Option "CacheLines" "1024"
And see if that makes any difference.

Nope. No good. Tried removing the composite extension too. Still freezes absolutely solid. I did manage to salvage a fragment of Xorg.0.log this time, but it's useless: just the modelines.
Oh well. Looks like I'll have to file a bug report. I suppose it's to the devs' credit that this is the first time in about nine months of using Arch that I've had to do that.
Further edit: As noticed by others on the forums, it's definitely xf86-video-ati. It works fine with the vesa driver. Or as fine as the vesa driver ever gets... my gamma's all screwy now.

I have a (somewhat) similar problem, since yesterday's reboot. I am also using an ATI 9200 (Pro, Rv280), and it also works with vesa. This card isn't supported by fglrx anymore, and when using radeon (which worked fine up to yesterday) I have this pretty effect...
However, switching to the tty works fine here.

Ok, some news. Reading another topic I was lead to this page, which says that one can try to autodetect everything. So I removed my xorg.conf, then ran startx, and... TADAAAAAA :
$ lsmod |grep radeon
radeon 122400 2
drm 71572 3 radeon
$ glxinfo |grep render
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x65
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL
Sure this helps.

After getting glitchy results with xf86-video-ati a week or so ago, the latest two updates have worked O.K. for me with no xorg.conf.
I'm using xrandr to switch manually between my laptop's LCD and my external flatpanel monitor, but that's O.K. Also, I see that xrandr will probably offer me as much or more control than I had previously with a well optioned xorg.conf. Eventually I'll work my way back toward a streamlined xorg.conf that tweaks the things that I may want to tweak.

I've been avoiding trying it again since the old version, well, works, but that's so crazy I might just give it a shot...
