[Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

Hi,

After upgrading to the new XOrg7.3 I have a flickering LCD screen on my Laptop.
My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 7500 mobility.

This is my xorg.conf:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: [Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

I played al ittle around with my xorg.conf, disabling almost everything what's not needed, with no luck!
In the end I started with vga driver, but: 3D acceleration is still available (regarding to glxinfo)! Also with no xorg.conf, there is 3D and flickering...
What am I doing wrong?? hmm

Edit: I'm using (the latest) xorg-server 1.4-5

Re: [Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

I've got the same problem. Any changes in xorg.conf don't change my display, even if I remove xorg.conf the screen stays as previous.

Re: [Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

The command "xrandr -q" should print all your available modes and mark with an * the one in use. Check if the one in use is the correct one. In case it isn't, you can try something like:

xrandr -s 1400x1050 -r 60

and see if that solves the problem.

Re: [Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

OK, I think it's a problem with my radeon driver. When using the vesa driver, the screen displays well.

Even with disabled 3D acceleration, the screen flickers when using the radeon driver.

My xorg.conf without 3D acceleration (especially look at the modules section):

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

Re: [Solved] XOrg 7.3 makes screen flicker

@lz3060: I already saw your post regarding your problem. Although I also have a Compaq notebook (Evo N1050v) I didn't have the same problem... On my screen everything was nicely visible and sharp, only at the very top and very border of the screen (a few millimeters) there were the edges of the black bar at the right side of your screen visible (the black & white stripes).
My problem was a flickering as if the frequency of the scrren redrawing was very bad. It was like looking in a very very old dieing CRT screen.
I'm using the radeon driver from the latest f86-video-ati package.
I filed a bug report about my problem at the arch bugtracker and the bug was solved in a couple of days! smile

Good luck fixing your screen!!
