Fastest Distro in the world ?

I know its a bad idea asking that question but the package I am trying to install is asking for a distro to be chosen from a list Gentoo,Mandrake,Red Hat etc..

I need to know which is the nearest distro to Arch to able to load the package & then test it....

Any help would be grateful  smile

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

Gentoo, I guess. Using gnome-system-utils, I found gentoo scripts work 99%.

I think Onebase comes the closes, www.onebase-linux.org

It works almost exactly the same, except you can also use source for installations (it's like Gentoo and a very modern Debian combined).

hmm ... the pkgs of onebase are not updated on a regularly base - you have only releases and no "current" (-Suy) as far as i know

It's called ABS (arch build system)

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

err how do I explain this.... its not thats you cannot get Webmin to run....thats not the problem...its getiing Webmin to function with Arch (setup) ...

Hence it has to be in setup list along with Gentoo etc...

emmm maybe hack installer

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

Whenever I'm administering Arch, I feel like I'm using FreeBSD with a linux kernel.  I guess it's because of how the configs are set up and that there is both a complete binary and source package management system in it.  The fact that they decided to put xfree86 v4.4.0 in their package database also adds to the similarities.

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

i dunno, a speed comparison with only numbers and nothing about the methods of testing available only on their own website is not very convincing evidence to proclaim themselves as the fastest distro in the world.  the most interesting thing is how they avoided gentoo altogether.

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

I gave Yoper a try...

Install was very easy sit back & let it load

But once running I noticed very little difference in speed

As you say comparing distros with no real set benchmarks makes it very difficult to judge them

No I'm sticking with Arch (better packages & plenty of them)

Re: Fastest Distro in the world ?

They all seem the same to me since all I have is a 1600+ Athlon-XP, Arch offers some features I like so that's what I use...
