Cannot Shutdown or Reboot

After I did a "pacman -Syu" yesterday, I can no longer shutdown or reboot my system. When I try to shutdown, It goes on as usual and then when it gets to the point
"Switching to runlevel 0...
Initiating Shutdown"
it just sits there and do nothing. The keyboard is not frozen but nothing works.
I tried ctrl+alt_del, ctrl+x, esc, altgr+sysrq+b but nothing happens.

Same problem with reboot

I also have another problem, which might be related.
When I open ksysguard I cant see the tasks or the info it should give me. Instead, the task manager is empty and the info on the status bar is 888888 instead of normal values.

ksysguardd is running.

Can you give me a hint on what I should do?

I forgot to mention that I'm running the 64bit version.

Fixed it.
Not sure which action did the trick, but here is what I did if anyone else has the same problem:

Reset pc, wait until you're at the kdm screen.
ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to a virtual console
login as root in the shell
killall kdm
killall X
poweroff
Then you should be able to shutdown normally.

Well I'm on a desktop with Intel/Nvidia so maybe its not quite the same. Who knows, I can't backtrace it to tell
