Anybody succeeded making a Macbook's sound work? One guy wrote it worked without patvhing for him with Arch32 but I tried 64 as well as 32 bit version (both on seperate partitions) with just the same result: No sound! Did I miss anything???
Alsa version is 1.0.15-1.

I am using Arch64 on MBP3 Santa Rosa. ALSA works fine with following line in /etc/modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3
I hope this works for you too!

This helped perfectly! Thank you very much.
I believe the Macbook wiki should be updated.

I'm running arch64 on a santa rosa laptop, kernel 2.6.26.5-1 and alsa 1.0.17 (supposed to fix lot's of issues. See http://webui.sourcelabs.com/ubuntu/issues/252482 and http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … ook&go=Go).
The only sound I'm getting is white noise.
Can you guys tell me the output of 'grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec#*' on your systems?
On my MBP santa rosa it's 'Realtek ALC889A', i tried forcing model=mbp3 but to no avail.
Then again, this specific chipset is not even listed here http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document … on.txt#739
Which version of alsa and kernel are you running?
Edit: hmmm . 'aplay -l ' gives me another chip name, which is the same as what you guys should have
dieter@dieter-mbp:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC882 Analog [ALC882 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC882 Digital [ALC882 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Note to myself: alc889a is almost the same as alc888 (see http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/l … el/904495). Although this one also is not listed in the alsa module options.
This chip is also often misidentified as a ALC885, but i think the alsa devs fixed that by now. (alc882 and 885 have the same module options)
An x64 opensuse user got it working only by installing the latest 1.0.18 snapshot. see http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/64- … sound.html

Scratch all that. My alsa was working all the time. I was trying to play mp3's with aplay, but aplay doesn't support mp3's and instead of displaying an error it played white noise....
Didn't need any patching, compiling or even forcing of any module option.
