Cannot su at all

I all,

I did a upgrade last Sunday (mainly for xorg) and after that, I cannot "su". Details:

starting kde session with regular user (example, john). Open a konsole, and I cannot su even to myself, "su john"). "su" asks me for a passord, but no matter I wrote there, it says "incorrect password" - and I am typing riht wink .

The error reported in /var/log/auth.log is

Nov 13 04:00:01 barto-arch su: pam_unix(su:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=pts/0 ruser=john rhost= user=root

starting text console session. Same behavior.

If I change /etc/pam.d/su allowing wheel group and adding john to that group, then when I do "su", the error is the same, but no password is requested.

Because it happens both in text and graphics console, is not related to kde, but perhaps xorg? Or "pam_unix.so"?

By the way, I can use "sudo" without problems big_smile

Any idea?

Thanks,
Peibol.

Re: Cannot su at all

If update caused your problem, then post us the last update from pacman.log (/var/log/pacman.log).

Re: Cannot su at all

Hi Dheart,

I'm supposing it was an update because I did it as always did:
su - ; pacman -Sy; pacman -Suw
and if I don't see nothing out of place,
pacman -Su

After that, the problem. The main update was 2007-11-11. Then 2007-11-13 arround 0:00 I did another upgrade, just in case. At 2007-11-13 04:34 I did a downgrade of a few packages, but the problem still remains (yes, I cannot sleep for other reasons).

So if you or other members could see what happens, I will be a help. I was reviewing a lot of /etc files to try to find the problem. Could it be some kernel feature? Does anyone know?

Here is/var/log/pacman.log
The packages downgraded are clearly visibles in the log file.
Prior to 11-11 the upgrade was tree weeks ago.

Re: Cannot su at all

Hmm... That's odd... I can't seem to be able to find the problem hmm I reinstalled my sistem two days ago and I can't reproduce the fault. It could be some rare bug, but however I cannot find it.
Anyway.
You could try googling the problem.

P.S. You might want to try this: Create a new user without password and try to su NEWUSERNAME and see whether you're given "Wrong password"
Then If this works try adding a password to the user again and try login again with su NEWUSERNAME.
If this works I suppose something could've messed passwords during update...

P.S. Buenas noches wink

Re: Cannot su at all

Hi all, more research.

* I've created a user "test1" with passwd, and try to "su" from another regular user (no root).
I can't su to him, it says "incorrect password". Same behavior.

* If I delete the password, and try to su from other user, the same. Even if the user doesn't has a password, su ask me for one!!!

But I can start sesion with that user at any case.

So I don't know.

Regards,
Peibol.

Re: Cannot su at all

Is your user in the group "wheel"? I'm not sure, but I think you have to be in this group to change user (or is it only to su root?).

Re: Cannot su at all

Hi all,

FizDev, there's no difference being in group "wheel" or not. The behavior is the same.

Thanks,
Peibol.

Re: Cannot su at all

I think your 'su' binary needs the SUID bit set.
