I decided to try the new fglrx driver with compiz fusion. After it turned out not to work, I tried to remove it and replace it with the xf86-video-ati drivers. I could replace fglrx no problem but when I tried to replace fglrx-utils, I ran into a problem:
# pacman -S libgl-dri
resolving dependencies... done.
looking for inter-conflicts...
:: libgl conflicts with fglrx-utils. Remove fglrx-utils? [Y/n]
done.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: fglrx-utils requires glitz
:: fglrx-utils requires gnome-screensaver
:: fglrx-utils requires gstreamer0.10-bad
:: fglrx-utils requires mesa
:: fglrx-utils requires xine-lib
:: fglrx-utils requires compiz-core
trying to use the force tag had no luck:
# pacman -Rf fglrx-utils
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: fglrx-utils is required by glitz
:: fglrx-utils is required by gnome-screensaver
:: fglrx-utils is required by gstreamer0.10-bad
:: fglrx-utils is required by mesa
:: fglrx-utils is required by xine-lib
:: fglrx-utils is required by compiz-core
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You want the -d option:
pacman -Rd fglrx-utils
Then you'll be good.
