can't browse samba shares after samba upgrade (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)

Hi all,

After today's samba update, i am unable to browse my samba shares:

As seen in pacman.log:

[2007-11-16 15:55] updating smbclient (3.0.26a-2 -> 3.0.27A-1)
[2007-11-16 15:55] updating samba (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)

Ive had this samba server running for a long time and never had any trouble. Apart from the system update i havent changed anything.
I have tried two machines to access it, a ubuntu and a windows one. The ubuntu one would mount it all right, but when you try browsing it it gives an 'Input/output error', these are the last lines found in /var/log/messages file:

Nov 16 19:42:06 Naboo kernel: [  855.043000] SMB connection re-established (-5)
Nov 16 19:42:34 Naboo kernel: [  883.442000] smb_add_request: request [cdccae80, mid=11] timed out!
Nov 16 19:42:34 Naboo kernel: [  883.442000] smb_proc_readdir_long: error=-5, breaking
Nov 16 19:42:34 Naboo kernel: [  883.488000] SMB connection re-established (-5)
Nov 16 19:42:36 Naboo kernel: [  885.375000] smb_add_request: request [cdccac80, mid=18] timed out!
Nov 16 19:42:36 Naboo kernel: [  885.375000] smb_proc_readdir_long: error=-5, breaking
Nov 16 19:43:04 Naboo kernel: [  913.607000] smb_add_request: request [cdccae80, mid=21] timed out!
Nov 16 19:43:04 Naboo kernel: [  913.608000] smb_proc_readdir_long: error=-5, breaking
Nov 16 19:43:05 Naboo kernel: [  913.648000] SMB connection re-established (-5)

The windows machine would actually show the files in the shared directory but after a very long wait. Browsing and reading files was taking such a long time that windows seemed like frozen so i had to restart.

I also tried rebooting the server but to no avail.

Anyone else with the same problem?

-- updated --
arch <--> arch
doesn't work, each way

arch <-- mandriva
I tried it now also with my friend and his new mandriva and he saw my share and my files, fast and with no problem

Re: can't browse samba shares after samba upgrade (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)

I had the same problem and I fixed it by reverting to the previous version of samba samba-3.0.26a-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz.

I use this a lot with my mythtv system and having a broken samba is a real problem.

Thanks for the suggestion but i don't have the file (samba-3.0.26a-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz) anymore. I usually clean pacman cache from time to time because of space problems, is there anywhere i can get hold of it again?

EDIT: I have open a new bug (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8694) with the contents of this post, if posible, can you guys try to confirm it too so it gets looked into? Thanks.

I am experiencing another problem.  It not only doesn't share anymore, but it has made my home directory publically available, and I can't seem to make it not do that.

It's like its loading its own config file now and completely ignoring mine.

have you tried using cifs instead of outdated smbfs?

I'm using such command to mount remote smb filesystem

smbmount //REMOTEHOST/REMOTESHARE /LOCAL/DIRECTORY -o username=USER,password=PASSWORD,uid=UID

and then i cannot list LOCAL DIRECTORY...

Re: can't browse samba shares after samba upgrade (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)

[tobias@T-POWA-LX ~]$ smbmount
Usage: mount.smbfs service mountpoint [-o options,...]
Version 3.0.27

Please be aware that smbfs is deprecated in favor of cifs

you should give mount.cifs a shot

Re: can't browse samba shares after samba upgrade (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)

I thought others might find this useful.

To convert my fstab entry from smbfs to cifs.

smbfs:

\\mythtv\myth /mnt/myth smbfs noauto,fmask=777,password=xyz,username=xyz 0 0

cifs:

//192.168.1.202/myth/ /mnt/myth cifs noauto,file_mode=0777,password=xyz,username=xyz 0 0

Using mount.cifs indeed helped me! Thank You a lot!
But I've started to think about older OSes? What about pre 2000 Windowses? Do they support CIFS?

Well, Samba 3.0.27a has been released which fixes our problem with smbfs.
