Hi,
I've been running with packages from the [testing] repo for quite some time now and never encountered a problem... until today. After a kernel update (to version 2.6.23.8-1), X just started to act strangely. When I try to start gnome or XFCE, it just freezes and it leaves me no other option than doing a hard power off. I looked for something odd in the logs but could not find anything suspicions. I could fix my problem by reverting to the [core] kernel version. I would like to report a bug but would need some help to find out exactly what is wrong to be able to give a detailed bug description.
Thanks,
Rognon

do you have latest nvidia package too?
you need nvidia -4 package else it has to freeze because of timer stats option enabled in kernel

Same here. I had both the most current nvidia and kernel26 package and upon loading X the system freezes. I was able to watch a grasp of an error message before the runlevel changed to 5 and hence X started, stalling the system completely.

please use the -5 package it seems the -4 doesn't work for everyone anymore, grrr

this problem isn't exclusive to the kernel in the testing repo
i had to revert to the old kernel (lucky for me i had just built a custom kernel) and the old nvidia driver
what was happening was that my entire machine crashed when running glxinfo and the only solution was a hard restart (holding the power button down)

It's still not working, tpowa. Updating to 2.6.23-8-1 (core!) and nvidia 100.14.19.5 did not do the trick, it still freezes when starting X.
I was not able to encrypt the error messages yet and and had to delete all my logs (they ate up all the space on my root partition).

Since I was using the [testing] kernel, I just reverted to the [core] one. To do this, I commented the lines about the [testing] repo in my /etc/pacman.conf file and did a
pacman -Sy kernel26
I had to be in console mode first though (since X would not want to start).
That worked for me.

but i can't acces to the console
gdm starts automatically, because i included it in my DAEMONS...
i will try with the installation CD, mounting the system, editin my rc.conf with nano and delete gdm
this problem es very strange, if persist, i won't be able to upgrade to any kernel...it worries me a little

i couldn't
when i access to nano and open rc.conf, doesn't show the rc.conf that i had
it seems that opens the rc.conf that came with the installation
i'm lost
i can't access to the shell, cause gnome start automatically and freezes the system, so i can't use pacman or any method to go to the shell
what can i do?

Use the fallback kernel, this should work out.

You should have an entry in your GRUB, called "Arch Linux Fallback" or the like, it's installed by default, just to add that.
