fglrx 8.42.3 is packing some serious heat

Well, I was having a quick browse of Phoronix and saw an article in which (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … =897&num=3) a ATi Radeon HD 2900 XT under Linux and paired up with the latest fglrx was a good 10 FPS ahead of the same card under Windows Vista when playing Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
I was thinking 'OMGWTFPANDA. Wow.'

So I felt the need to put my 2600 XT through the paces and see if fglrx is actually becoming a decent driver.
All I had in terms of cross platform games was Nexuiz, so I weaseled that up and ran the first timedemo with the below settings.

OpenGL 2.0 Shaders On
Vertex Buffer Obiects On
Show FPS On

Resolution 1024x768
Bits Per Pixel 32-bit
Fullscreen On

Vertical Synchronization Off
Anisotropic Filtering Off
Texture quality Best (0)
Texture Quality Reduction Reduce skins only
---
Particle Quality 1.0
Decals On
Bloom On
High Dynamic Range Off
Coronas On
Gloss On

Deluxemapping On
Offset Mapping Off
Realtime Light Bumpmaps Off
Realtime World Lights Off
Realtime World Shadows Off
Realtime Dynamic Lights On
Realt.Dyn.Lights Shad. Off

Well, Arch Linux paired with fglrx 8.42.3 got this result:
1910 frames 23.4362053 seconds 81.4978353 fps, one-second min/avg/max 52 82 116
And Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit paired with Catalyst 7.10 got:
1911 frames 26.7800000 seconds 71.3592233 fps, one-second min/avg/max: 45 72 100

Woh. The Linux set up proved to be quicker, with an average of 10 fps higher.
Seems like AMD/ATi have finally got their act together.
Can't wait for fglrx 8.43!!

On the sad side... it still lacks support to the new xorg, and kernel (out of the box, works with minor patch), theres also some gliches in the aticonfig tool and amdcccle still doesn't work sad

Actually, it's the ONLY fglrx to support the new xorg.  However, you're right about the rest - lack of kernel 2.6.23 support and glitches abound.  Most glitches have workarounds, but it's not fun.

and lower AIGLX performance than 8.40 + XGL, and huge video / open GL flickering issues under compiz, not to mention massive mem leak ...

I also can't wait for 8.43 .. probably not for the same reasons though.

Re: fglrx 8.42.3 is packing some serious heat

I always figured any implementaion of XGL should be faster than an AIGLX one.
Wouldn't it be better comparing 8.42 + XGL with 8.40 + XGL ??

But yes, the lack of kernel support and the non-functioning amdcccle is bad news.
Fortunately, amdcccle doesn't really provide anything I need and the fglrx packager has done a fantastic job of patching up the kernel support.

I've the same problem. The ATI Catalyst driver inflames the temperature to 100 degree celsius whenever the video is rendering.
Its in Dell Studio XPS 1645 and I am on XFCE.

Nothing particularly works or has worked for this; including  ForceLowPowerMode!
