Hi
I bet this is an old problem but I have decided to sort this out once and for all. I have a Compaq presario V3000 series laptop and the problem I used to face is "Heating up". Any "heavy" task like kernel compilation or multimedia processing usually brings down the laptop saying "Critical temperature reached...100C ..blah blah"
I have made some observations though. The heating is not so prevalent in 32 bit linux. (On yes, I use arch64). It is weird but I couldnt install ubuntu 7.10 64 bit because the laptop overheated and switched off inbetween the installation !!!
I guess something is not proper in acpi setup. The fan folder is empty. Is it a wrong dsdt table? I have updated my BIOS to the latest version. No fan control yet? How should I debug this problem? Have any compaq laptop arch users successful out there?
P.S. I am pretty sure fan doesnt have dust, I have checked it
