Re: Firefox 3

I installed it and so far I like it better than the 2.0.* series. I even ported over the extensions I was using with Firefox 2.

Now how would make the font for the top menu larger? Way too tiny for my taste... Changing font properties seemed to work only for text on web pages.

Re: Firefox 3

The font for the menu bar is dependent on your GTK settings.  Run gnome-control-center if you use GNOME and see if choosing a bigger font makes a difference.

Thanks for the tip. I ran gnome-control-center and adjusted the fonts. It worked for all other applications except Firefox. It turns out, Firefox ignores what's in .gtkrc-2.0 and it uses the settings in userChrome.css:

/*
 * Make all the default font sizes 10 pt:
 **/
 * {
    font-size: 10pt !important
 }

Re: Firefox 3

I installed the package from AUR, though I am running x86_64. I also have KDE and no gnome installed.
When I run Firefox3 it prints lots of "Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_font_describe: assertion `font != NULL' failed" errors,
and all the letters in dialogs and menu are garbled (resembles normal text displayed as UTF...).
Did anyone experienced that?

Re: Firefox 3

I have compiled x86_64 package of Firefox3 beta2.
This repository (thanks to Mark Constable) contains 'firefox3' package:

[tanis]
Server = http://jakub.markconstable.com/x86_64

(It was created for KDE4, but Firefox3 beta2 is now also there)

Re: Firefox 3

If by extensions you mean addons, it should automatically detect if it is compatible with the new one. If not, you can still give it a whirl and install it manually.

Re: Firefox 3

I'm positively surprised by this beta. FF3 is probably going to replace Opera (using Kestrel on 64bit here) and will help me get rid of the only major closed-source application I use. (The other being ipw3945d, which I'll replace by iwl3945 in the future.)

Re: Firefox 3

Kudos the the Firefox team. Just when I was losing faith in their browser, they release FF3 beta2 with a huge improvement in rendering speed. I feel like I've upgraded my DSL line. Thanks tanis for your hard work.

Re: Firefox 3

Thanks tanis. This is really, really quick.

My only question to the Mozilla people is when are you going to build in an up button? There are very few things in life more useful than an up button. I don't want an add-on. I want an up button.

I'll go complain again to the right people...

It's a button that would allow you to navigate up one level in the the directory hierarchy. So if I was in this (AUR Package Requests) forum and pushed up, I'd end up in the main index. It's just like you see in some file managers. If I were in /home/skottish/somehwhere and then pushed up, I'd end up in /home/skottish. As far as browsers go, both Opera and Konqueror have this functionality built in.

Why don't I just use the 'Go Up' or 'Uppity' add-ons? Because theme designers don't usually write for add-ons, and I don't feel like modifying nearly every theme I try.

Are you kidding? I've never wanted an up button. And if you're browsing files (e.g. from ftp), there's always a way to navigate to the parent directory.

Anyway, I'm extremely impressed with Firefox 3. I think the new location bar is a bit busy, especially with its two lines of text, but that's my only complaint. I love the speed and native gtk widgets.

Oh yeah!!!!! (let me exaggerate with my exclamation marks tongue)
Now I'm officially back to Firefox. I had ditched Firefox for Opera, but since the last Flash plugin upgrade broke the support to Opera, I'm back. I'll never go back to Firefox 2 anyway, that's far too ugly for me.

By the way, why do we need a PKGBUILD for it? You can just run it without installing it, using the executable "firefox" in the extracted directory.

So far, this version is quicker and lighter, it feels like Opera tongue
As for the new Vimperator, it feels faster as well... what a joy big_smile

Beta 3? Where did you get it from? I can't find the link anywhere.

I'm not sure if the firefox-nightly PKGBUILD  has be updated, but if not you can just change b2 to b3 in the sources line and it should build without problems.

Re: Firefox 3

Thanks, but I notice it's not been released yet, I think I'll wait until the actual release comes out. Beta 2 seems quite stable so far, I don't want to break the magic tongue

I'm not sure that I would have necessarily described it as a being more useful than almost anything else in life, but it definitely should be a part of the standard navigation buttons (back, forward and UP).

I find myself flailing around for the non-existent 'up' button when I'm using FF on other PCs, and that's when I notice how annoying it is to be without that functionality. I definitely need my Uppity.

As far as theming combined with extensions goes: I haven't messed around with using themes since about the time of the Phoenix / Firebird transition, so I wasn't even aware that there was an issue with extensions / add-ons and theming. smile

I'm using it. Works quite fine! Just

sed -i 's/p2/p3/' PKGBUILD

wink

Sweet! I didn't want to part from vimperator, so I didn't try the new Firefox. Now I'm as enthusiastic as Finferflu (or maybe that's not possible ?! ... Anyway, I'm excited at this great christmas present!)
