dependencys

Hi.

I have a problem, every time i try to install like emacs i get X packages...
Why? sure its dependency but since when do i need X to run emacs?
Is there any logic to this decision?

I guess this is a newbie question and i cant see how this is KISS.

The version of emacs in the repositories actually has a GUI. It therefore requires X. typing 'emacs' will get the GUI version, if you want to use it without a GUI, try 'emacs -nw'. If you'd like to have a build without X support, have a look at abs (Arch Build System.) The wiki should get you started.

I know the abs system, thats not the problem, i need to do it with all the apps... thats the problem, this is gonna be a problem when arch gets bigger and this is a big setback vs gentoo etc.

I expect if it becomes an issue they'll just maintain a separate repository for people who want console only systems. To the best of my knowledge, the question has never come up regarding emacs before, although there was a big discussion about vim (it seems to be more popular around here ;-) ), which is now split into three different packages.

well i dont mean just emacs, i mean in general... and i cant see how its kiss without double packages

One of the things that is most KISS about Arch is to not worry about "the general case" if said case is a hypothetical. ;-)

I say this in spite of that fact that some Arch devs were recently arguing about how to manage GPL version 1 packages. Silly devs.

Well arguing is good, that makes us going a step forward, not listening is not good.
But anyways, i think it should be separate packages or something like use flags in pacman so you don't have to install all dependency's
