Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

Is it just me or would you agree that Flash and Java, the two most popular browser plugins, actually hold back the implementations of x64 Linux? I know you can have 32bit libs or jails, but for most users this is just a bit to much hassle.

Re: Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

I'm currently running swfdec and java-gcj-compat. The downside to this is compatibility. swfdec is roughly a full implementation of Flash 7 with some features of 8. gcj-compat is roughly the equivalent of Java 5. They both work, but there is a lot of content that doesn't function.

I wouldn't say it's too much of a hassle, at least for those who don't mind taking the time to tinker around to get there system configured which is pretty something you need to do with arch anyway, verses the more user friendly distros.

Re: Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

I think they do but only to a slight degree, it wasn't very hard to install them if I remember correctly, at least not with arch wiki to help me out tongue

But I think I had some smaller problems with getting java6 sdk installed and running correctly, might be wrong.
Anyway it would be great not to use lib32, made my system kinda messy imo. hmm

If you're running Konqueror, you have no problems. 64 bit Java works perfectly there, as well as Flash with nspluginwrapper. Why other browsers haven't simply copied KDE's Java plugin framework (KJAS) is beyond me. I'm not proficient in coding though, so maybe it's more tricky than that.

I've never had problems. pacman -S jdk jre installed and set up everything perfectly.

Re: Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

I think gnash works better for me especially the svn from AUR. Better than swfdec. gcc-gcj is about the best available fo Java in x86_64. i used to have Blackdown working (only as a browser plugin) alongside sun jre 6 as the main java (limewire, openoffice etc) by tinkering with java paths but some how lost it totally after recent upgrades (which screwed it up, xorg or kernel, I don't know).

So I am making do with gcc-gcj. Seems like we 64bit guys are poor cousins of Sun.

I'm using the latest flash-beta by adobe with nspluginwrapper. Other than flash eating my cpu up everytime I watch youtube or something like that. Everythings fine. I have gcjwebplugin. But I don't need java that much while browsing.

Re: Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

I can't say that I miss Flash nor Java plugins in Firefox so for me there's no problem. Only thing I do miss is wine, which I run inside a 32-bit chroot (it's really no hassle).

Re: Flash and Java plugins holding x64 back?

I have extra/gcc-gcj 4.2.3-1 [installed] and aur/gcjplugin 4.2-1 [installed] but java in firefox isnt working. I also have the extra/jre 6u3-2 [installed] so should I remove that?
