keyboard locked and frozen

hi.
since i installed arch64 on my new machine,  my keyboard randomly froze and i can't type anything with it anymore. I had everytime to log out from X. and then i can use it again.
when it is locked even typing a key like capslock or numlock do not change the led on the keyboard

so though i first thought it was an hardware problem with the usb dell keyboard, i think now it has to do with kde or X.

anyone ?

i have changed the line
Option "XkbModel"    "dell"
in my xorg.conf to:
Option "XkbModel"    "pc105"

but i still got that problem.

it seems to happen when i want to type too fast and type 2 or 3 keys at the same time with a ctrl or alt or altgr or win key. don't know

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

This also happens to me on my Acer Aspire 5021 WLMI laptop. Have yet to figure out why though.

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

Are you guys using the nvidia driver? I think that's been know to happen with the newer nvidia drivers. I've had to use the 96xx driver to keep from freezing up w/ my hp dv6000.

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

I don't have any specific URL's ....just a lot a reading here, Ubuntu forums and Nvidia forums. And honestly I'm not sure if it was just keyboard or the entire machine that locked up. Could have been the latter, which won't help you smile I do notice even using the 96xx drivers with Compiz that after a resume from suspend, the mouse will be working and able to click on the gnome-screensaver options, but the keyboard will remain frozen for 10-30 seconds. Then it'll fix itself and work fine.  Might be worth a try to downgrade your drivers....it's easy 'cause they're in extra.  nvidia-96xx.

I'm using Arch64 w/ Gnome

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

Am using:
64-bit AMD
32-bit Arch kernel and other packages
nVidia
xorg
kde

On-board video is: nVidia Corporation: GeForce 6100 nForce 405

All software (kernel, drivers, etc.) are up to date.  Yet, another lockup happened about 30 minutes ago.

When the keyboard locks up, it feels like it's locked up, but has not.  If I hold down any character long enough, it comes through.  Same goes for modifier keys.   So, to do Shift-A, have to hold down the Shift key for about two seconds, then hold down the A key for two seconds.  Typing a password is excruciating -- OK, really, impossible.

Since the mouse consistently works, I can kill applications and then K->Log Out...->End Session OR start a new session.  When the X login appears, all is well.

If I start a new session, the keyboard works just fine in the new session.  If I return to the original session (Ctrl-Alt-F7), the keyboard is still locked up in that session.  Go figure.

Seems like all reports about this mention keyboard locking up.  Can anyone try this next time?  Hold a key down and see if in a few seconds it comes through.  Would be interesting to see how many cases there re of complete lock up vs just a super slow keyboard response.  (And who knows.  This info. might even help someone find the root cause.)

EDIT: To try to fix this problem have tried various mouse and keyboard brands.  Have tried unplugging and plugging back in the keyboard and mouse several times (right after a lock up).  Have also tried to avoid various applications -- just in case it's related to user space interaction (getting desperate, I guess).  The problem persists.  It's very random, too.

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

Hy,
i have the same problem. Im running arch32 bit on my Samsung R70 Laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
i've also installed the latest nvidia drivers, because in my laptop is a GeForce 8600M and i think this card is not supported by the older driver versions. Furthermore i'm running compiz-fusion on kde 3.5.

Is there already a solution? Has anybody announced this problem to the bugtracker??

Completely forgot about this thread, sorry about that.

Well i am actually using the latest ATI catalyst driver. Openbox is my wm and arch32 the architecure, the lockups seems to happen completely randomly and sometimes a week can pass without it happening and then it suddenly happens 4 times in a day.

When i try to restart X to make it work again X hangs, which makes me think it might be a different problem then the one you're having.

I have tried to isolate the problem but it's kinda tricky when it happens so randomly sad

Same here, as far as randomness.  In fact I thought the problem was resolved because it hadn't happed for so long.  But it's back... today x4-5, yesterday x2.

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

i happened to me tonight too. but did not happen for quite some time. at least a month. always happen when i use vim. in konsole

like soloport said, i could have some letters, if i stay 2 seconds on a key:
i got it to print something but it's double. like key a and i got  aa. but if i stay pressing it i got one a each time.
nothing
aa
aaa
aaaa
etc...
as if we need to have a second key pressed to have the first one to appear. as if the first one stay in some kind of a buffer...

but it's unusable because i got double letters everywhere and can't delete the wrong one. because i delete 2 of them everytime !
example: ii  eennddeed  uup hhaavviinngg ssoommeetthhiinngg  lliilkkee  tthhaatt

i am using kde (3.5.8)
i wonder if it's that ?

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

solstice, do you use XMMS specifically? If not, do you tend to do any mpg123/mpg321 things while working?  I noticed the problem shows up far less if I don't start streaming radio.  (At this point, any pattern might be useful, I guess.)

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

i do not use at all xmms (that software from the stone age ? :-) ) and no mpg123 or stream

it happen when i use a lot the shift key repeatdly. or press repeatdly many times  in a short period of time/

i googled a bit and find that some people solved that problem with using the notsc option boot passed to the kernel.
i am gonna try to use that and see if that change anyhting.

i haven't been affected by that but for weeks but sinceyesterday it's 5 times a day. and i have switch to arch32 and it is the same.

i am sick of that f**** bug.

linux is really ready for the desktop. with the same bug that windows 2000 for example where the keyboard lock the same way as this !

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

Hello,

I have the same problem as you guys. In my case, it happens more often when I play a game.
Sitting on a Pentium D 3.2Ghz, 2 Gig RAM, GF 8800 GTS (nv -nvidia driver), running fluxbox.
Take Guild Wars or Tibia (the game) as examples. I normally do my routine by either using WASD keys for movement on Guild Wars and the arrow key set with Tibia. When the freeze happens, my keyboard completely locks with continuously typing one of the movement keys.
I manage to shutdown the running game by using the mouse, as it's fully functional while the keyboard is locked.
So doing anything at all with the keyboard is hopeless.

EDIT: I'm using the x86 version of ArchLinux.

Regards
- Sh33p0

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

same here on a compaq presario 2100 pentium 4. The "hold" method does give input.

Any idea how to reset the keyboard without rebooting? Maybe some command of some sort?

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

Thought i had the same problem as you guys: working mouse, frozen keyboard, key strokes are processed two seconds late.

For me the problem is the SLOW KEYS option in the UNIVERSAL ACCESS PREFERENCES. I think it can be activated by some shortcut (like pressing shift for 5sec or something). I just need to deactivate it.

Hope this helps some of you. And keep in mind: For some people hitting on key every two seconds is the one and only way to type - don't complain wink

Re: keyboard locked and frozen

I've also started having this problem, but I can't be sure at what point it actually started.

Arch 2.6.32 (x86_64)
Xorg server 1.7.3.902
Gnome
Logitech S510 wireless keyboard

No errors or relevant warnings in X.org.log or kernel.log.  In fact, I've just suffered the problem while typing this post and checked the log files immediately, but still no clues.
