I see in a lot people's screenshots that they're using networkmanager. I have friends in the office using networkmanager with Ubuntu.. I first tried it last month but it didn't work with my modem which was encrypted with WEP. I tried every possible option to get connected but it didn't.. I deleted networkmanager and continued using netcfg..
Today, when I again saw a few people using networkmanager, I decided to give it another shot. My modem is now using WPA.. In the office, it worked fine with the modem (with WEP). But at home, it again didn't work. It doesn't get connected. But netcfg works flawlessly..
Another thing is that, it doesn't get connected when my computer wakes up from sleep.. I don't have this problem with netcfg..
It doesn't happen only when it wakes up... If I close and open the wireless in networkmanager, it doesn't get connected until I restart the daemons networkmanager and dhcpdbus..
I have 07:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02) and I'm using ipw3945 driver.. I have a HP dv2000 series laptop computer.. (dv2580et)

Had a similar issue myself, switched to wireless assistant which has worked flawlessly since. Give it a go?
I made it long
as I lacked the time to make it short...

what is wireless assistant ?

see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8307 for the supposed cause and a simple workaround for the sleep issue.
also, take a spin at the iwlwifi driver. it works wonders for me (it wasn't a few months back but things have improved a lot). YMMV

Wireless Assistant rocks. It also solved my problems with Networkmanager

I didn't like Wireless Assistant that much.. Network Manager seems more maintained (at least to me) and would be a core part of GNOME in the future.. it's promising i guess.. I also have the idea of making it compatible with arch network profiles.. that would be really nice..

tunix have you tried wicd? I use it and it seems to work pretty solid. I to had been confined to the netcfg method but wicd has allowed me to autoconnect at home and school and never worry. Wicd is in extra.

I tried once but as long as I remember it had problems with Turkish locale which annoys me a lot.. I'm going to give iwl3945 driver a shot and see if it works..

well nm is totally DE agnostic, since it's a daemon talking via dbus to a client frontend. and as frontend there is gnome-networkmanager and knetworkmanager.
as for the net profile integration, well you then 'just' have to write another client, reading arch profiles and talking to nm via dbus. it would obviously even work without X at all.

I've never liked Network Manager. It's always been flaky for me.
I've been using wifi-radar along with iwlwifi for my wireless needs and it is just fine. Of course, wifi-radar won't handle your wired connections but those are usually auto-detected for me anyways.

networkmanager + wpa_supplicant + {ipw,iwl}3945 is a pain in the ass combination.
networkmanager often fails with these two, and these two sometimes fail with each other.... Other distros keep an eye on that, and don't update until they know problems are solved. With arch, the packages get updated as soon as they are released, so no specific testing is done.
I sticked with netcfg long ago, givin up on networkmanager. it just fails.
