whats the zen git kernel better than the default stock kernel
and whats the other kernels
the vanilla and all those
Offline
Vanilla is the basic "core" install no extra packages.
All of the rest are kernels which include the latest linux OS releases and some variations.
Much can be gleaned from the Installation forums regarding the status of each of the possible variations.
Most users start with the Vanilla and upgrade to more involved installs.
The wiki has good advice on the use of vanilla install. Read a lot!!!!
Best to you...

It's the same for every patchset: Inform yourself about the purpose of the patches it contains and decide if you find them useful.
If not, don't bother.
Also: there is no "better", never.

For people who want to use experimental features and gamers as well. Its performance is really nice.

Hm, I confused zen with xen, my bad
Might give zen a try the, tonight!

Could someone explain the "branch" thing in the zen-git PKGBUILD in short.
Waht's the difference between "master" and the default one "v2.6.24-rc4-zen1", e.g.?

All your questions answered. And then some.

For me at least, Zen kernel and Compiz Fusion do NOT play nice together. Went back to stock and all problems solved, well.....except for that stupidly annoying bug where you can't use the gtk window decorator cuzz they go invisible. Sucks, cuzz I really liked the Zen kernel patchset, just not the CF problems and slowness that came with it.

Do you have NVIDIA or ATI? I'm using a GeForce 4 with nvidia-96xx-zen and everything works fine.

I don't wanted to open an extra thread for this. I have two problems.
1)
I compiled the kernel26zen-git with the sbs modul (support for smart batterys).
Booting the PC freezes at "Loading standart ACPI modules".
Even holding the Power-Button pressed does not wokr to shutdown the laptop. I had to remove the Battery!
If I blacklist the sbs modul in rc.conf I can boot the zen kernel.
So, in the config provided with the PKGBUILD in AUR the sbs modul is deactivated.
Is the sbs-modul incompatible with the zen kernel? Any chance to get it wokring?
2)
During boot, at "Mounting Local Filesystems", I get
umount: /proc/bus/usb :not mounted
What does this mean? Do I need /proc/bus/usb mounted?
Back to topic.
Without the sbs-modul I'm not able to read the charge-level of my battery.
So for me the 'stock' or the 'rt' kernels are the "better" choises. ;-)

Nvidia 8800GTS, it's not a graphics issue. The problem is that things bog way down...music will studder/stop for seconds, system will bog when gnome-terminal is opened, etc, but only when CF is running under the Zen kernel. On the system I have, things should never be bogging down.

Then you should try the default scheduler setup
Completely Fair Scheduler Tunables -> CFS predefined setups -> [x] Fair Desktop/Server
With "Interactive Setup" I get exactly the same results like you.

You are the man Thanks! Problem solved, I'd never have guessed it. Thanks.
