TV display in black and white [solved]

I upgraded my system recently, and now have everything except lm_sensors current (downgraded that due to some conflict issue).  Tonight I went to watch TV, and find that my TV screen is in black and white.  I backed out, and window maker is also black and white on the TV.  Very retro, but my wife is not happy.....  TV works fine when just bringing in from cable, and the LCD monitor for the mythtv system is in normal color.

Using mythtv player on a desktop, I find that the recordings are still in color, so that's good.

GE Force 7600 GS with the nvidia driver loaded; svideo out for the TV

Cables appear to be tight; any ideas?

Googled this and found lots of information about PAL settings in an NTSC world; none of that applicable (but here for anyone's future reference).

Dug into my box of goodies and found a new s-video cable, just to try that - instant fix (at least for now).  Old cable shows no sign of damage, so who knows why this works.
