Command Prompt App

Does anyone know of a widget or something to put a command prompt on the desktop.  I want it to be permanent so I  can just type something in real fast without having to open a terminal.  The DE doesn't matter, I can try with any...

Here is an example of what I'm looking for, but I want it on Arch and not Windows smile

Re: Command Prompt App

There's a Screenlet very like that, but I don't know of any standalone ones.

Which one are you referring to?

I found this one...if it's what you're talking about.

I hate sigs. This one only exists to remind myself to get an avatar.

Re: Command Prompt App

Not really what you are looking for but I am going to recommend it anyway. Bind a key (for example: alt+F2) which then will execute gmrun. I know it is a run dialog but it does have both tab-completion and history.

I find it a bit silly to use a applet of this kind since it in most cases it will need to be activated with a mouse click before it is possible to write a command. That ruins the idea a bit since it will require input from the mouse whether or not you already have the hands on the keyboard, which then is mandatory anyway since we are talking about entering a command. So in short, it requires unnecessary hand movement.

I completly agree. If you quickly need to type something, it's much better to have the prompt quickly accessible from the keyboard instead of the mouse. gmrun is pretty awesome and can be configured to do all kinds of stuff.

Re: Command Prompt App

You are right about the whole gmrun thing.  I've been using the first screenlet recommended, but I do have to click.  I remember using gmrun with OpenBox...I wanted something that maybe I could Tab to or Alt+Tab to, but Alt+F2 sounds good also.  I will also check out the XFCE verve thing once I reinstall XFCE...   Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Command Prompt App

devilspie?  You can embed a terminal in the Desktop with it.  It might be Gnome-specific, though.  I've never tried it outside of Gnome.

It's in Extra.
