Steam installs fine under Wine, and it even runs fine under wine, but when I enter my username and password, it crashes at the "Connecting steam account" window. I heard a rumor that it comes back to life after about 15 minutes of waiting, so I'm on that now. But that sounds kind of silly ... perhaps there is a better way to get this rolling?

Has it worked in the past?
Try deleting your *.blob files in the main steam directory (this is harmless, the files should be AppUpdateStats.blob and ClientRegistry.blob)

It has, yes, but not in this instance. I remember, way-back-when time, when I got Counter Strike to run under Linux and was estatic about it. But it seems to just hang with what I am working with now. BTW - posting 20 minutes later, nothing
I'll try deleting those blob files anyway and see what happens.

Ok, I removed the blob files and fiddled around with it a bit. This time, it is doing the same thing, only it is spruting out errors in the console (didn't do this last time):

Well, I should've mentioned that I'm using the bin32-wine package from the AUR on a 64-bit system. Out of curiousity, I installed Steam on my girlfriend's i686 machine and it works just fine.
Now, to find where the difference lies and hunt this problem down ...

Alrighty, I followed the 32-bit chroot guide @ http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … bit_system and it is absolutely seamless, so I suppose I'm going to be using Steam this way for the time being.
Let me know if any of you guys have a solution or an idea, I am still very willing to try it (a chroot is still kind of a last-resort idea to me).

bin32-wine mainainer here, try running
nice -n -1 wine Steam.exe
Happened once for me too, but when I restarted it, it worked fine.
Try different nice values if it doesnt work with -1.

I`ve solved this problem changing Windows Version to "XP" ("win2000" by default) in winecfg.
Steam runs fine now.
