Kaffeine plays .avi's with distorted video

hey everyone,

The title was self explanatory.  Whenever I open a .avi with Kaffeine (or xine, or kmplayer) the output is distorted, but the audio sounds fine.  These files were ripped from some of my DVD's a while ago and worked in other distros.  I'm guessing this is a codec problem.  I noticed the xine parameters settings asked for the location of the win32 codecs.  Where does an install of the "codecs" package put them? In /usr/lib/codecs?

If anyone knows how to deal with this let me know.

Thanks

Installing VLC seemed to fix it... weird.
