x11 gedit xterm numeric keypad stuck in numeric mode

Ok I tried googling and i tried searching this forum and if the answer is here I'm staring at it without seeing it.

I've got two PC's in this room, one running arch linux the other running centos 5.
Both run gnome and both have the same keyboard definition in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier  "Keyboard0"
    Driver      "keyboard"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "uk"
    Option "XkbVariant" ""
EndSection

On the centos system editors like gedit recognise my num lock key and allow me to choose whether "numeric keypad 1" types a '1' or goes to the end of the line. On the arch system I have no such luck numeric keypad 1 ALWAYS types a 1 never mind whether the num lock light is on or not. And here's the best bit. Both machines are plugged into a belkin KVM switch so it's the same physical keyboard !!

OK I know there must be a config setting somewhere. Can someone put me out of my misery please !
