[Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

Hi,

I've been trying to get a copy of all of my DVD's encoded into XviD format to free up some shelf space around the house. However, every time I've tried my box seems to randomly either restart or hang completely. I've tried a few applications and have had similar results each time, my latest attempt was using dvdrip. It gets past copying the data onto my hard disk but is failing at random points during the transcoding.

Has anyone else experienced this recently? or is there any known problems that I've not noticed on the forums?

Like most encoders, Xvid will use 100% of your processing power when encoding. Are you sure your system isn't overheating?

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

I checked the core temperatures after doing a reboot, core 1 was at 27C and core 2 was at 35C. I'm pretty sure that's within safe operating temperature. I'm beginning to wonder if this is related to all of the posts I've seen about kernel problems hanging people's machines.

The temperature of your processor will go back to idle temps in a matter of a few seconds. My start up idle temps are about the same as yours. Before I replaced my cooling system, I could go to 65C (which is overheating for this processor) in a few seconds encoding videos. As soon as I stopped the process, I would go down to run-time idle in few seconds. If you want to know for sure, you need to watch it while it's happening.

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

It's been a while since I updated this thread, I decided to go through the task of encoding all of my cds before thinking about the DVD's. 500 cds later and now I'm wanting to do the DVD's again. I've had a little bit of luck and managed to get a few encoded so far but the problem has appeared again. I've created a script that records the temperature every minute and it looks like the cpu's cores get quite hot during an encode, the highest I've seen before a crash or reboot was 50C.

I guess I should really buy more fans, but I got thinking and am wondering if it would be worth running the case without the side panel attached? The only problem I can see with this is that one of my fans is attached to the side panel. What does everyone think? will it be cooler with the side off and no additional fan or cooler as it is?

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

IMHO 50C seems normal to me when under a heavy load like encoding xvid video.  What's your processor?

Maybe you should run a memtest on your ram.

I encoded a couple DVD --> DivX using handbrake the other day and I toped out at 52C without a problem.  (well within the thermal limits of my CPU)

Just a heads up you can use the "watch" command to keep executing something at a set interval..

watch sensors

will display sensors output every 2 seconds by default..

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

Thanks for the advice, I'll run the memtest later on tonight.

My processor is and AMD Athlon 64X2 3800, I'm not sure if it'll make a difference but i'm running the i686 distro.

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

Well the data sheet for Athlon 64 X2's shows the Max temp to be 70c
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content … /30430.pdf

With most modern CPU's I'd guess that you shouldn't worry until your temps reach 60+ under load.

Maybe run another high load/heat test on the system aside from a xvid render.    mprime in AUR will put your CPU to 100% usage..

If you have a live CD kicking around.. try that.  Heck if you got a windows partition try both of those with 100% load for a while..
Anyways it will rule out if the issue is hardware of software.

It's been a while but I managed to find some time to run memtest whilst I was cooking. Let it run for an hour with no problems.

I'll try running mprime in a bit, I'm trying another encode at the moment.

I can't get mprime to build, it won't download the tarball from the mersenne site, is there any other applications you can think of that would produce a really heavy load?

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

yeah.. actually a few days after that post I found a tool called stress which allows you to put a load on your CPU, RAM, and Hard Drive.. it's very nice..

It's in the community repo smile

Re: [Solved] Problems encoding xvid's

The problem seems to have gone away after shifting from i686 to x86_64 and moving my base unit about to get better air flow.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out smile
