[SOLVED] Terminal and gnome-terminal crashing X in Xfce

Whenever I try and execute either Terminal or gnome-terminal in Xfce, X crashes and returns me to the GDM login screen.

xterm executes and runs just fine.

here are the errors I get:

What in the heck is a gdm_slave_xioerror_hander error?

I tried reinstalling GDM via pacman, didn't help.

Any ideas?

I had this bug when I used Xubuntu. Change your colour depth from 24 to 16 in xorg.conf.

Lenni,

I changed the color depth as you suggested, and it resolved the issue.  Thanks!

Looking thru all the posts in the bug report you posted the link to, it doesn't appear that there is a real solution to the problem, just this workaround.

I would really prefer to be running in 24 bit mode, but oh well...

The strange thing is that is worked for a good three months before it suddenly started occurring about six weeks ago.

?!?

I had the same thing happen.  I was about the time of the Xorg upgrade so I blamed that...

I mean you could use the GNOME terminal, but that has got some dependencies. Maybe there is another great terminal out there?

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal and gnome-terminal crashing X in Xfce

From what I read in the bug reports, it only affects certain graphic chipsets, primarily Intel 810 and SIS 63xx.
So if I really need 24 bit color, I have at least three or four other old graphics cards lying around I can pick from to stick in the computer as a replacement.

ROXterm uses VTE like the Gnome and Xfce terminals, but is lighter on dependencies (libglade & dbus-glib, apart from vte itself). The menus and preferences are a little different, but in use it looks and feels very like the other two.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal and gnome-terminal crashing X in Xfce

I ended up just yanking out the video card and replacing it with an old ATI AGP card I had lying around.  Everything works perfectly in 24bpp with the ATI based card.
