Hi,
For some reason, the instant I plug in my iPod (Classic 80GB, but also did it with my old Nano 1st gen, 2gb), my laptop turns off completly. Instantly powers down and I have to remove it from power, unplug the battery, plug the battery back in, plug power in before the laptop will turn on again.
Someone else in the ubuntu community had this problem as well, but an answer was never found: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=244735
I'd REALLY appreciate help on this one, I'd dont know how to debug it or anything, like which log would it even be in?
Thanks,
Michael

I haven't always had this issue. I had an iPod nano previously, as stated, and that plugged in fine. Then, after going away for a couple months and not having my laptop, when I came back, my iPod started doing this. Same with the new classic.

It indicates an overload of the power system of the desktop. It may recover if the battery is fully charged,
A suggestion only and assumes no changes to the desktop system.

IS there anyway to debug a potential issue like that, i mean like to test if that is the problem?

could be shorting. Try a different ipod cable.
Someone in this house completely demolished one of my USB ports, and when anything was plugged in the computer powered off. By demolished, I mean the pins were bent and crossed -- of a USB port.

Ok, will try that, but that shouldn't be the issue, because I had two cables, a new one came with the new ipod

The wikipedia has the following info on the li-ion battery which may be your battery type....
A unique drawback of the Li-ion battery is that its life span is dependent upon aging from time of manufacturing (shelf life) regardless of whether it was charged, and not just on the number of charge/discharge cycles. So an older battery will not last as long as a new battery due solely to its age, unlike other batteries. This drawback is not widely publicised.
At a 100% charge level, a typical Li-ion laptop battery that is full most of the time at 25 degrees Celsius or 77 degrees Fahrenheit will irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year. However, a battery stored inside a poorly ventilated laptop may be subject to a prolonged exposure to much higher temperatures than 25 C, which will significantly shorten its life. The capacity loss begins from the time the battery was manufactured, and occurs even when the battery is unused. Different storage temperatures produce different loss results: 6% loss at 0 C (32 F), 20% at 25 C (77 F), and 35% at 40 C (104 F). When stored at 40% - 60% charge level, these figures are reduced to 2%, 4%, 15% at 0, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.

I meant the port on the computer.
lilsirecho: not much luck, I think you got the wrong thread!

Ok, i might try that, why again would that make much of a difference though? :S
edit: particularly on a laptop
