I'm guessing the audio is Intel based and should be picked up easily by udev. Are you sure it isn't just muted?

Hmm, I'm somewhat new as well, but I ran into the same problem one time (diff hardware though), and I ran alsaconf (think that that is in alsa-utils pkg) as root (I'm a sudo fan) to figure out what module it was, then added it in /etc/modprobe.conf. udev usually picks most of it up though, it did with another pc I had.
Another interesting situation that can happen is that alsaconf writing to /etc/modprobe.conf can actually break the udev detection, in which case you'd want to make sure the sound card module WASN'T in /etc/modprobe.conf.
Sorry if I'm being confusing, but hope to help.

i ran alsaconf, but it was not successful
maybe the output of "aadebug" script can help figure out whats the problem?

I think there is a spot in /etc/rc.conf that you can specify sound modules to be loaded and leave the alsaconf section of /etc/modprobe.conf blank (or commented out). I think its something that might be getting in the way of udev. But I'm no pro, just scratchin my head is all.
