Sound is gone with the latest update..

I think gstreamer packages should be rebuilt since all sound in GNOME is gone... mplayer can play some sound but Rhythmbox, Pidgin and the others can't..

I'l guess the devs are handling it then... i don't  want to boot my windows installation to listen to music...

Its been over a year since last windows boot;-)

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

I downgraded the kernel for now... But at least they say that the latest alsa has some problems with snd-hda driver... I hope that it'll be over soon..

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

You can also upgrade to the latest kernel version from testing repo. I made it while ago and sound is back.

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

Hi,
have the same problem, I run KDE and all KDE sounds are gone. Pidgin and Skype can play sounds.

Tried to upgrade to the kernel26 in testing 2.6.23.12-1, but this did not work.
I have the:
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce3 250Gb AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a1)

Any suggestions on what to do?

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

Hi,
have now also tried to downgrade to 2.6.23.8-1 but same, no KDE sound. The sound server (artsd ) crashes on KDE startup. But mplayer works fine, sound and everything.

Any suggestions??

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

Ok,
have debugged my problem to my KDE artsd profile. I made a new user and started kde. Then the KDE sound is working.

How can I rebuild my KDE artsd sound user profile?

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

Well, I just did a pacman -Syu and the only thing there was the 12-2 kernel.  After the upgrade and a reboot the sound doesn't work.  Absolutely NOTHING else was upgraded except the kernel.  I am going to try to go back to the 9-1 kernel which is what I had before and see if that works.  FWIW, the laptop I'm using has a little "mute" indicator/button.  No matter what I do that button remains "muted".  alsamixer, etc. all show sound as UNMUTED, but the actual keyboard will never unmute the sound.  That didn't happen BEFORE the kernel upgrade.

The bug listed above is marked as closed, but I don't think this is fixed.

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

OK, back with the 9-1 kernel and I have sound.  I'm not saying it's the kernel's FAULT but something in the new(er than 9-1?) kernel(s) is taking my sound away.

I use a DV9000 HP laptop, nVidia 7600, ICH8 (hda-intel) and everything works fine on kernel 9-1, but not on 12-2.

Should the bug be closed?

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

no issue here. everything's fine. hda-intel with Waikiki chipset.

wait..i don't think i run (or have use for) arts(d). i have all apps directed to alsa, or oss. i let dmix do the job of mixing, not arts. and i think it's the default setup for kdemod, not sure of kde.

that's why it's always good to keep more than 1 kernel, no harm done.

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

What's "arts(d)"?  I know the reset of this post is going to sound dumb, but....

I use Gnome.  Could that be part of the issue with alsa?  Should I consider switching to OSS via the Wiki instructions?  If so, do I need to REMOVE alsa or just disable it in some way?  I've never messed directly with my asound.state file, but maybe that's the ticket?

I just find it odd that with the 12-2 kernel my mute switch/indicator just CANNOT be unmuted, but with 9-1 it's fine.  It's like I can't get the hardware to unmute with the new kernel, not so much not get the "sound system" to play.

I'll take any help anyone can give, but for a few things I do I kinda need sound.

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

OK, I think I've beat this dead horse long enough.  I reinstalled 12-2.  I installed and set up OSS and "disabled" ALSA.  Well, the good news is that the mute indicator didn't stay muted.  Yay!  I though it might be licked.  But no sound still came out of the speakers.  I went back to ALSA.  You can load something like Audacity and SEE that the machine thinks sound is playing but no sound actually comes out.

I think this is something deeper than I can figure out.  but neither ALSA nor OSS gives sound with the newer kernel.  Does anyone think it'll ever come back?

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

artsd is the daemon.

i think it's a chipset-specific problem, if alsaconf doesn't solve it. because mine is also hda-intel but probably different chipset from those who are facing this.

I rmmbr, after a kernel upgrade once (or was it just alsa-lib upgrade?), i had the headphone control, an extra pcm control, and my hardware buttons to increase/decrease volume could no longer relate except for the mute one. Pretty strange this ALSA thing.

If u don't have need for software mixing, don't wait anymore and get on the bandwagon to OSS (v 4) smile

Re: Sound is gone with the latest update..

I couldn't get any sound with OSS and kernel 12-2 either.  I truly think it is something in the kernel that's causing the issue -- but I can't be sure.  I may try OSS again in a day or two, but I'm pooped on this issue for today.

Thanks for the info, though.
