Here are my own personal experiences with the driver (which I'm uploading as I type):
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro
Direct rendering still works.
xv seems to work OK.
Dual-head is still totally broken for me.
AIGLX still does not work - compiz refuses to start, no matter which workarounds or hacks I try.
No OpenGL memory leak (although I could never reproduce this in the first place)
amdcccle looks nice, seems to work fine
On first try, I still had to run glxgears, Ctrl-C, then run it again for it to appear.

And what about suspending to memory ?
s2ram worked well with fglrx, but constantly freezes on resuming with catalyst...
Offline
JaDa - I listed all that already in the original post.
elide - unfortunately I haven't heard anything either way. I don't use suspend myself, so I don't know.

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7170 Release
Driver 8.44.3
Working better. No problem with the Catalyst Control Center anymore
Thx, for the quick update

Oy... interestingly enough, after upgrading and restarting X I've lost my native resolution of 1680*1050. xrandr --query reports the new max as 1280*1024. Reverting both catalyst and catalyst-utils restores the proper resolution. For the record, I have an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400.
Other observations about the 7.12 driver:
*hibernate/suspend still fails (regardless of vga=0 and "UseInternalAGPGart" "no")
*amdccle does load without trouble
In case anyone else needs to revert and doesn't have the (i686) v7.11 packages cached, you can grab them from my website:

it seems like ati didn't learn anything in the past few months.
By the quality of their drivers i can suspect my notebook to work properly in 2010. Sadly, it won't be my notebook anymore by then which means i spend the whole lifetime of this notebook with crippled drivers - Thanx ati!
OnTopic: The memory leak is really gone and amdcccle works fine (like it did with the latest release ), but the irritations in the right lower corner, missing aiglx-support and a few minor issues lead me to the conclusion that this driver only contains fixes that would need a few days of work to fix- apparently the ati guys need 1 month for that.
though the OS-Radeon-driver doesn't support 3d on my card (xpress200M) it is my favorite by now, because it brings less problems.
Sorry but i'm really p+ssed of

Hey,
I have exactly the same problem (Radeon 9700 Mobility here). My native resolution is 1400x1050 and it used to work just fine but the newest driver maxes out at 1280x1024 (as reported by xrandr).
Shame ATI can't write drivers.
Thanks for posting the old packages.
Best,
Philipp

Me too. Normally I use 1440x900 resolution, but after updating, my resolution is totally wrong. Thanks for the packages!

Pros, uses less ram, no dual xorgs started anymore?
Cons, no 1680x1050
Thayer thanks for the old packages!

Those reporting resolution problems - it is already listed in the known issues section, so I'm sure they're working on that.

Hmmmm, I'm using 1680x1050 for my resolution as well, with a 9600XT. Do I dare to update?

but the irritations in the right lower corner
Tried to set
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
in your Device section? Maybe this will help you.
Btw. Thinkpad T60: Native resolution of 1400x1050 won't work with the latest 7.12. No ATI card anymore

when I try to start X, I ger an error message:
(EE) fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler
I am currently a newbie at linux, so I don't know how to fix this, but I have tried to generate a new xorg.conf

Same problem:
Cannot use native 1680 x 1050 resolution on my ati radeon X1400. I'll try to restore the old one.
Next time, better have a look to the forum first :-)

Another same problem with resolution, cannot set 1440x900, on ati mobility radeon x600.
Thanks to cerebral for sending me to this tread an show me the previous packages
On the future, I'll see the forum and the possible issues with the new drivers.

I have the same problem with resolution on my radeon x1400. Because of this kind of bugs i'm using radeonhd driver for a while now and i like it. Those novell guys (and community of course) are doing great work.

Neither that nor the 7.11 release work on my Radeon HD2600Pro AGP.
Nothing Arch-wise, its the driver that still doesn't work.

My goodness. I spent HOURS trying to solve this video-resolution problem. I had no idea where to start looking, I'm sadly only a linux-noob.
Thayer, thank you so much for those packages!
What I don't quite get yet is: Does the older (7.11) catalyst driver still not accept Modelines? I read my numbers from Xorg.0.log when the screen was still haywire with the 7.12 driver. But now it still reads:
(EE) fglrx(0): === [swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 2
It's working fine now, but I'm a bit ashamed to say I don't quite see why

How can they put out such a half-assed driver that it doesnt support 1680x1050?
Offline
Can anyone get me the old drivers for 64-Bit???
