wasn't sure what to put for title. but i saw a post around here a while ago about a live cd version of linux based on arch that could be installed on a usb drive....forget what its called
i just got an 8gb ocz rally2 drive. really im looking for a linux distro to run off it. i tried puppy linux, but to be honest, i just don't get it. DSL i had issues with. i need to keep the drive in fat format. i also had knoppix bootable, but was unable to get it to save settings or even allow me to install programs.....im more or less a newb i guess in alot of ways. been running arch for several months now though on all my systems

The item you are concerned with is Faunos and is available for download at Faunos.com.
This system installs 500 packages of arch-based programs and uses pacman just as in archlinux.
It installs with dd command in about three minutes. The download is 993MB.
There is a forum. About 90 users at this time.
The save session works great. I have 600MB of added packages on my 3GB of ram system while using a 4GB flash drive.
You might give it a try...its not small!!!!

You might also like to look at FaunOS (http://faunos.com/) which is the current new shiny...

I wish it could fit a CD like it was under 700MB size. How does it compare with knoppix, mepis, Zenlive, etc? It is a worth it project though. never heard of it before.
If they made a livecd installer DVD, that would make it more attractive to a great deal of folks.
Kudos to them though.

SS16;
The faunos system is based on archlinux and you can install via pacman and remove via pacman.
The system is a Live system, as such, it is r/o. However, with aufs, overlays are possible which permit the added packages via pacman. The base system is 993MB in size but thru pacman, undesired packages can be removed.
The Live system allows the user to download a package and try it out. If it is to his liking, save session is provided to make it permanent.
Each overlay adds to the system in the flash drive, therefore a 2GB flash drive is recommended to allow for expansion. However, if one reduces the base packages by removing undesired items, the partition size for faunos can be managed.
With DVD install, it is uncertain whether save session is available with all DVD devices.

if you happen to be a do-it-yourself kinda person, you might want to check out archiso (see projects.archlinux.org). While I never actually got around to testing the USB stuff, it should work fine, and it certainly produces good livecds.
The suggestion box only accepts patches.

well, i tried the usb image, it worked good, but it undid the fat32 formatting on the drive and rendered it useless when i connect it to a windows box.....which is primarily what i use it on. got some portable apps on it that i use at work to get around some of their stuff
the IT guys there missed the active directory 101 class, they dont know how to copy the account they setup in their desktop image to the default user profile......so every day we log in, and try to open word or something, and it has to finish installing and ends with a permission error, or when we open IE every day, it prompts to be configured, home page and phishing filter, and everything else. so now i just use firefox, and msn lite, and openoffice on my flash drive, so my bookmarks dont get erased everytime i log out, and it doesnt take all day for me to save files on network shares, they just go to my flash drive. i just have to rename firefox to foxfire, otherwise i can't run firefox.exe, i'd apply for the IT office......but i've been written up twice for telling those guys off cuz they're useless.......wouldn't want to work with them
anyway, im getting off track, but basically, i need a distro i can put on the drive that keeps it formatted fat32 so that i can boot it and run it when i need it, or otherwise plug it in and run whatever i need off, i want both options

If you're willing to 'roll-your-own' you could try building it with larch. The default script for installing to USB formats with fat16 (my machine wouldn't boot from fat32), but you could try tweaking that if you really want fat32. Alternatively - if your machine is new enough, you could try using a second partition for the live system, then you don't need to touch the windows one at all.
