A lot of people with 4 cores run two instances of the SMP client. They say they get more PPD overall.

You could try running 4 instances of the SMP client, then use FAHmon to see which setup gives the most total PPD for the entire machine.

FAHmon looks like GUI utility to me. This is *hides* Ubuntu server edition w/o GUI so I can't use this. Is there any CLI tool?

I did some eyeball analysis with htop a while back. One instance I see load hopping between 3-6 CPUs. Two instances seems to utilize all 8 CPUs quite nicely. I added two instances anyway.

Too bad F@H don't have Solaris client, I would put PE 6950 16cores to use...

I installed the package from AUR but when I run ./fah6 -smp -configonly like it tells me to, it says "This client only supports 64-bit linux machines. Your machine was detected as ''."
I'm running 32 bit Arch on a 64 bit processor, I suppose that is what is causing this error? Is there any way around it?

Run it without "-smp" and see if that works.

SMP mode requires 64-bit OS. Just run multiple F@H and separate it by "machine id".

Starting with official 6.02(non-beta) F@H requires passkey.

Another first. Today was the first time I have ever seen this. All 20 top producers were over 1000 PPD. We are down to 50 active folders, but still have a high team PPD.

Just followed the guide on the wiki and going to stat folding (for the arch team obviously) but when I start it

sudo /etc/rc.d/foldingathome start

it starts the daemon fine but a few seconds later it comes up with this

No option -tpi
(single precision)
starting mdrun 'Mini chaperonin'
500000 steps,   1000.0 ps.

Anyone know what this means, if its an error or normal?
I also noticed that in system monitor i have 4 "FahCore_a0.exe" running (I only have a single core cpu) is this normal?
Also do I need to register my username anywhere or just put it in client.cfg

EDIT: After leaving it running for a while (and reading a bit more) I've worked out what the "starting mdrun" means but are the two lines above that normal?
After looking at my "My Folding Page" it is reporting my username "Anonymous" and team number "0" even though both are set in client.cfg

Will this slowdown my internet coz I have a slow connection at my house...:| Would this be ok if I'll only run it 3 time or more a week?:D

It only use the internet to download the work unit to compute and after when the work unit is completed. It also check regularly if there are unsent work unit in case there was no internet access when the work unit was completed. You could probably arrange it so it does that while you are not using your internet for something else.

When I use to run FAHmon, it would sometimes hang up while trying to load, so I wrote the following bash script to occasionally check up on my two instances of F@H:

#!/bin/sh

echo Core 1:
tail folding1/FAHlog.txt
echo -------
echo Core 2:
tail folding2/FAHlog.txt

Basically you can just watch the FAHlog.txt file of any instance you're running if you want to see its current status.

I was also wondering what it was used for. I mean, is there a way to know if the work done by my machine has been used to create some drug?? One can see the results section of the wikipedia page. Their seems to be _a lot_ of papers using f@h data. That is really a good thing: it is not useless to fold!

As to if it helps the linux community... not a all!!! It's more of a competition between people, where the benefits goes to the health community. A way for the geeks to help out by showing their powerful machine!

You can also see it as a publicity for your distribution/community. Arch is oscillating at rank between 140 and 160, which good for such a "small" community. You can then say that people running Arch have nice machines and are dedicated...

I have a pool of computers at my disposal (say ~100 dual core machines) in our computer labs which i have ssh access to. But no root access obviously, can I still fold without root? which is the main page for that project?
I thought i could fold with those computers over night, they are running 24/7 (debian something)
I'll see that i can put together a script to use these machines for a better purpose (i would have to renice the process though so i don't trip the cpu-hog wire in the monitoring system and get bombarded by emails from our admin server ^^)

That's the whole point of F@H - being a cpu hog.
I'd better refrain from installing any distributing computing software on machines unless you're the admin yourself.

don't worry, we are supposed to use these machines, that's why they run 24/7. and the admins are nice,
worst case: they kill my processes and tell me i shouldn't do it again
I am of course allowed to hog the cpu, but not if the official distributed computing client in our network needs the cpu, that's why i need to renice the process, so it hogs defensively
I'll tell you of my success and how well the admins took it. I won't use all of the machines at once of course, that would be silly ^^

Well I just joined the team! Finally put the beast to use instead of it just idling there

Do I just use the same passkey for other machines I have laying around? Though a bit older they might as well be put to use!
