Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

Specs From Vendor Website

       SPECIFICATIONS
Display: 15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280 x 800) with DiamondBrite Technology
Processor: 1.5GHz, VIA® C7-M Processor
Graphics: VIA Chrome9 HC IGP (64MB shared memory, 128MB maximum)

Installed arch, ratpoison, leafpad, dillo. hwd -- saw this in the wiki

su
hwd -xa
exit
startx --- gives me a working, albeit large resolution xorg, 1024x800

I then tried
pacman -Ss chrome

which gives me 3 choices, unichrome
[root@myhost justin]# pacman -Ss chrome
extra/openchrome 0.2.900-1
Most developed drivers for Via Unichrome/Unichrome Pro under xorg
extra/unichrome-dri 7.0.1-1
    DRI drivers for Unichrome-based videochipsets
extra/xf86-video-unichrome 0.2.6-6 (xorg-video-drivers)
    Unichrome video drivers for X.Org
[root@myhost justin]#

i installed all of them, tried switching 'vesa' in my xorg to 'openchrome'  'unichrome' 'unichrome-dri' and none work, i get a screens failed error.

then did pacman -Ss via

installed xf86-video-via

changed driver to via, and that gives the same error, if their are log files you would like to see, or even commands: to run to help troubleshoot i will be happy to provide them.  Thank you in advance, ratpoison (first time using it) is pretty sweet smile  On a side note, i ran ubuntu on this with evilwm, this exceptionally quicker. Arch Rocks.

Re: Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

Suggest a search such as ...unichrome xorg.conf... in the forum search for some clues.....

Re: Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

only thing i really see is
"Here is how you get direct rendering on machines that use Unichrome, with minimal fuss:

1. Use hwd to create a xorg.conf.

2. Edit xorg.conf. If you use xorgcfg to do this, and you specify your video card using the video card index, then you'll have to to further editing manually - you have to remove the "Chipset" line in the Device section or X may complain about your chipset being unsupported, even if that isn't the case. Leave in the Modeline stuff - you'll probably need it.

3. Grab the latest "common" and "via" snapshots from dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots. Unpack first "common", then "via", in the same directory; enter the "dripkg" directory thus created, and run install.sh. X must not be running when you do this.

If the installation works, then X should start normally, glxinfo should say that DRI is enabled, and glxgears should give you something like 680 FPS (with 16-bit color)."

I take that as run hwd, then download those 2 files, unpack, install.sh and then change my driver to via?

Re: Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

Ok still no luck with this, I dont want to have to put ubuntu back on the laptop because i dont like it, and i only have 512 ram.  Yet the driver works and i get the right resolution so i know its possible.  I tried adding the testing repo and then upgrading, and downloading the via/openchrome/unichrome chipsets and i still cant get it to work, i can post my xorg.conf.log if that might help

Re: Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

not trying to reply to myself, but on via's page they show this driver for my chipset

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?Pa … bCatID=185 (at the bottom)

Would i build this from source, and then change the drive to via? or is it unichrome?  And do i need to build the driver for frame buffer?  Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone?

Re: Everex 1503 Trouble with Xorg/Drivers

axion419: in all three possible cases, the driver entry in xorg.conf should be "via".

The driver you probably want is xf86-video-via. However, it sometimes contains unrepaired bugs that are fixed in openchrome. Also, older hardware might IIRC have problems that would favor the use of xf86-video-unichrome, although that one was kind of buggy last I checked.

All of the above drivers depend on the unichrome-dri package.

So, again:

1. Edit your xorg.conf so the Driver line says "via" as opposed to "unichrome", "vesa", etc.
2. Install either xf86-video-via, openchrome, or xf86-video-unichrome. xf86-video-via is preferred.
3. Make sure xorg.conf is correct for your other configs and hardware.
4. Start X and run glxinfo to see if you have DRI.

tried what you said, and still get a no screens error.  I can post the xorg.conf log if that helps.
