For those who don't use addblock, there is a small publicity banner (from Google) on the top of most archlinux.org web pages. Most of them are related to linux. This is probably a good way to get money to pay for the web site. Today, I found two ads that let me with a strange feeling :
Here is the first one :
"Microsoft Windows Server
Has reliable features. See for yourself.
www.Microsoft.ca/getthefacts"
This is not a big problem, but there is a second ad that appear some time :
"Microsoft Windows Server
Choose Windows Server over Linux. Get the facts."
I can imagine a newbie that is reading the archlinux web site ... will it be convinced ...
?
According to the Google adsense web site there is a "Competitive Ad Filter" that enables you to filter out specific competitors or specific advertisers. Maybe this should be used in this case.

Hehe, reminds me of the McDonalds commercial I saw once in a Burger King, when they were showing MTV on an array of LCDs...
Dunno if that is really a problem, though...

Just donate some money every month or so and they don't have to use ads.
Use UNIX or die.

It's google ads, who ever is running them can "block" certain sites from being advertised... but on the flip side of the coin, I'd click EVERY m$crap add that runs up there.......... I have NO problem letting M$ give the Arch Linux site money
Remember, clicking ads up there DOES mean money for the site/or whoever runs the google ads. ![]()
So, do we block M$ ads cause they are offensive, or do you just take M$ money and put it to good use
I vote for the latter lol. (not that we get to vote... I don't think that is really an option
)

I'm with crouse on this one.

"Competitive Ad Filter"
Competitive? Lol, get over that... What's the thing with Linux users, why they have to be such Microsoft facists?
Anyway... they are paying the ads. Having to pay ads to get sold says a lot by itself ![]()

Nono, you're not getting it: Microsoft are the fascists here!
Mah, I actually agree with you. Waaaay too much stupid anti-MS talk in OSS-circles...
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.

seriously, who cares? crouse is right. no matter if it's microsoft or some fictional megacorp as long as it gives money.
and no, i dont think a noob, who browses the arch linux website will click on that ad thinking "oh, if an ad on a linux website tells me, windows was better, it must be so"
if he does: never mind ![]()

Yeah, this can even be a "too stoopid" filter. I like how arch is welcoming to newbies, but some people aren't noobs, they're just dumb
