Booting with usb devices attached [SOLVED]

When i try and boot my laptop with either a penstick or an external hard drive attached arch hangs when "loading udev events" for about 5 or so mins then boots as normal but wont recognise that any form of usb storage is available

any clues as to where to even start looking?

Try disabling module autoloading (MOD_AUTOLOAD in rc.conf) and loading modules manually. Well, if you do have autoloading enabled, that is.
