man problem: right quotes turn into <B4>

In man pages that use the tick ´ as the right quote symbol, this gets displayed as <B4>. This happens no matter which font, user, or terminal I use, even in the x-less terminal. I seem to remember that similar things occur with other symbols too, but this one is the most common.
Any clues?
