After upgrading, startx freezes before loading my window manager (dwm). The cursor works but nothing else - not even alt-ctl-return or alt-ctl-del. Downgrading to 6.7.195-3 fixes everything.
The working version shows "drmOpenDevice: open result is 8, (OK)" in Xorg.0.log.
Version .197-1 shows "drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)

I am running a Compaq Presario 2145us which uses a Radeon 320M(U2) video card.
CORRECTION: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1
Any suggestions on how to approach this?:

I confirm that last ATI drivers (xf86-video-ati-6.7.197-1) freeze X with ATI Radeon Mobility U1 chipset (IGP 320M).
Downgrading to 6.7.195-3 fixes the problem.
