Problems installing to ASUS Eee PC from external hard drive

Hi Guys!

I'm trying to install to my new ASUS Eee PC (8G), but am having problems.

I've followed the simple instructions here, applying them to an external Samsung 400Gb hard drive:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _USB_stick

I then reboot my Eee with my external hard drive connected to the left-side USB, enter the BIOS and make sure the Samsung is number 1 in the Boot menu under hard drives, and change the boot order so the Samsung HDD is topmost. Once I've left the BIOS, I get to a black screen with a still cursor (white underscore), and nothing happens.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? I'm happy to run any commands that may be of use.

I highly appreciate any suggestions you might offer!

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Problems installing to ASUS Eee PC from external hard drive

As I understand your setup, your external drive is connected via USB and you are trying to boot from it.

This arrangement may work if your bios has USB-HDD boot capability.

You may be able to use a CD boot assist to get the system to boot.

I may not understand your setup but a USB device boot needs correct bios to boot from it.

Good luck!  Merry Christmas....

I think you need to hit F2 to get boot menu.... select USB and off you go....

Test your Usb drive on another pc just to make sure its booting correctly

Or try Faunos :-)

Re: Problems installing to ASUS Eee PC from external hard drive

Cheers for the responses guys - I've tried with a USB flash stick that my brother brought when visiting for Xmas, and it doesn't work with that either. Since the BIOS on the Eee definitely supports booting from USB, and since I'm setting the correct options for this booting, there must be something I'm doing wrong during preparation of the external media. I've followed that Arch wiki page to a 'T' though, so I'm not sure what... I've posted on forum.eeeuser.com too, so hopefully they may be able to assist me.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to post; I appreciate it!

In the asus EEE forums, they mention using .......esc...at boot up to allow enabling the bios to boot USBHDD.
