The package xorg-server 1.4.0.90-3 give me a bad resolution, but xorg-server 1.4.0.90-1 is everything ok. I hava a widescreen monitor 1440x900 and a Geforce 6600 using nvidia driver from repos.

This appears to be a known issue
...
The patch redhat-extramodes was removed from xorg-2. It had extra modelines for widescreen (and probably other weird stuff).
I have so far been unable to get X to work with widescreen resolutions, even after adding a Modeline to xorg.conf.
EDIT: The redhat extramodes patch was removed, but an ubuntu one was added.
I don't know what the difference is, except that with ubuntu I don't have widescreen, and it seems that this is true of many others.

The interesting thing is, that my xorg gives me a widescreen resolution per default if I use the opensource-ATI-driver. In KDE I can use the proper resolution. (I got an 4:3 CRT, no widescreen...)
now with 80% more sax-appeal!

I updated to the latest xorg server yesterday and no problems with widescreen. Don't claim to understand xorg.conf but I think the needed bit of mine is below, if it's any help. I also have Geforce 6600 using nvidia driver.

I'd like to add my voice to the "regression test your X when you drop patches" pool, this is seriously dumb.
R350/9800 Pro with fglrx and opensource drivers fails + Dell 2005FPW panel fails in the same way (there's no longer an autoconfigured widescreen modeline, leading to bad resolutions).
Did ANYONE with a widescreen monitor even LOOK at -2 and -3 before dumping them into extra?!
Also:
1680x1050:
# 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087
And Modes "1680x1050" in the Display subsection don't fix the issue with fglrx. It partially fixes the issue with the opensource driver, and I think the remaining issues for me there are just my card and the opensource drivers disagreeing.
XRandR doesn't list 1680x1050 as a possible mode ever with fglrx.
EDIT : I found the deeper regression issues: ATI broke their drivers too. Revert catalyst to an older version *AND* X to -1 or earlier and it'll work. Lame on ATI's part and a pretty big oops on the X build too.

I got a solution: You got to add a "Virtual"-line in your "SubSection "Display"", where you tell x11, what your prefered highest resolution is. My one looks like this (as 1024x768 is the solution I want to have):
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 1024 768
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSectionI know, it's not a "real" solution. But it works!
now with 80% more sax-appeal!

Oh i forgot to tell how i solved it: I just removed the Metamodes line:
Option "metamodes" "1440x900_60 +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0; 800x600_60 +0+0; 1024x768_60 +0+0; 640x480_60 +0+0"
This line was removed.
