why does dbus fail on start up?

Most likely because you have it after the HAL daemon.
It is unnecessary to manually start the dbus daemon, if you are using hal. Hal autostarts dbus. wink

this is the order in the rc.conf

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network samba dbus hal sonypid hplip ptal-init cups netfs crond alsa sshd fam ipw3945d stbd gpm)

hal is after dbus.
nevertheless i shall remove dbus from the sequence.
hope it works

even though i removed dbus from the daemons string, it still fails to load.
weird, right?
