how to make themes?

Are there any good guides to make gnome / kde window decorations or themes? I haven't really got any ideas on where to start and would like to attempt to make some :)

Preferrably metacity kwin and dekorator, not emerald themes.

Thanks.

Re: how to make themes?

I'm pretty sure metacity uses Gtk+ for theming. kwin uses Qt. You'll have to find documentation for those GUI kits. I tried this a while ago... I've given up: the only decoration I have now is a 1px line around windows! Good luck.

Re: how to make themes?

Dekorator uses PNG images for its decorations, so it should be fairly easy. It's ages since I used Kwin, but you should be able to figure out what's going on by taking a look at other people's themes. If I recall correctly, there's a deliberately ugly theme with each element a different colour, to help new themers work out how it all fits together.

Isn't the IceWM engine installed with Kwin by default? It's similar, but simpler.
