No sound with snd-intel8x0 on a Gateway laptop

And I'm frustrated. Has anyone else made this work?

Gateway model 4538GZ.

I've tried what was suggested in the wiki.
I unmuted everything but external.
I put

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=0

into /etc/modprobe.conf. (also 1, 2 and 3)
I've googled.

I can't figure out what I'm missing.

This is the output I get when I try to play a sound, but no sound is heard

One more question (and this may be irrelevant): I ran a command (the last time I tried to get sound to work -- several days ago) that seemed to indicate that I had 2 sound cards. However, I can't remember what the command was. I would be happy to post the output of that command, if only I knew what it was.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated.
