Getting KDE3 and Gtk fonts to look better

At the moment I am testing KDE4. But I need to use some KDE3 apps and some Gtk apps. The problem is that the fonts on these applications are very ugly. How would I fix this? By the way, I'm using a laptop, so I would like subpixel hinting.
