Problem with NetworkManager

I have a strange problem with NetworkManager. Whenever the internet cuts out, my laptop freezes. I can't do Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-F1. The lights start flashing. I cannot do anything but hold down the power button. Can anyone help me with this?
