Very strange installation issue (unable to read pkg directory)

Hi,

I've recently unsuccessfuly tried to install Arch on a friend's computer. My problem was I couldn't read the core/pkg directory from within the livecd (the installer). The CD content could be read without any problem from my computer (arch), from an other computer under Windows XP, and even on my friend's computer under Debian Etch which I finally installed (temporarly I hope).
I tried to manually mount the cd from the arch install CD which resulted in the following :
- mounting was ok
- switching to the pkg directory returned "permission denied"
- ls -l showed something like :
?????? ? ??? ??? pkg

Any clue ?

Thanks !

Re: Very strange installation issue (unable to read pkg directory)

how much memory did your friends computer have?

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

I've had similar problems several times but the problem then was always a really old and crappy CD-reader, exchanging it to a new dvd/cd device fixed everything.

Re: Very strange installation issue (unable to read pkg directory)

Thanks for the advice.
The weird thing is, that I had no problems installing debian on the same device, and then I had no problems reading the arch installation cd under debian...

Re: Very strange installation issue (unable to read pkg directory)

So a solution would be to use some other live-cd and copy the whole base-package directorytree to the hdd, or simply put the tree on a usb-device, then when your arch-installer-cd has booted you mount the directory somwhere under /src and just go. Should work fine, but you probably need to read exactly howmuch of the directorytree needs to be there.
